A photographic journal of something different in my everyday life in Portland, Oregon

iPhone app users eat your hearts out. Check out my legitimate cross-processed photo.

Portland has these bubblers all around town. For those of us who trust our tapwater and don’t buy into the hoax of bottled water, these are a great resource. Took this picture after leaving a mentor session at the NELA center for Student Success.

Please note the colors of this have not been altered from the orginal film print – this was made by a process called “cross procesing” which involves developing the film with another (invalid) process. It often results in extreme saturation and color shifting.

My friend Jack quit his "real" job a while ago to pursue self employment designing and building botique guitar effects pedals. In conjunction, he also services amplifiers and other effects pedals. He’s a treasure trove of knowledge and a very clever guy. Pictured here is his work bench he rents at a local guitar shop. It’s really impressive to see a good friend take control of their destiny and have such success.

August 7th, 2010 Helicopter Flying Lesson!

What a rad birthday present! Katie bought me a twenty minute helicopter flying lesson. Right? While we waited for the pilot to return to the airport in Dundee, Oregon, we made small talk with the wife and family of the pilot who were all outside putting down lots of McDonalds. The helicopter ride was a blast – just me, the pilot and Katie in this tiny plexiglass bubble, engine strapped on the back and no doors. We flew around the farmland in the area, where the pilot gave me some quick instructions and let me take control of the whirlybird. The controls were incredibly responsive and sensitive. Pictured here is said helicopter taking the next couple out for their tour.

August 7th, 2010 Helicopter in Dundee

After my helicopter flying lesson Katie and I strolled around this small airfield so I could take a picture of this helicopter that looked very similar to the one I had my lesson in. I was hoping to obtain a closeup shot of the one we flew in, but I was unprepared and he touched down and took off too quick. How fun would it be to own one of these?

August 1st, 2010 Brown Trout

Shown here is a rare species of Brown Trout, also known by the common english name of “Justin Brown”. He is the the supremely talented guitar maestro of Bruxing, the band in which we play together. We’ve been making music together now for nearly three years. This is a picture of Mr.Brown in our practice space, which has these high-tech egg cartons on the wall for sound enhancements.

July 29th, 2010 Adventures in Homebrewing

Cody and Johnny are master of the homebrew. There’s usually something in the works – either a regular supply of kombucha or a small batch of beer. Both come out with great results. They’re getting ready to put these cleaned bottles to use.

July 29th, 2010 Dogs love hemp rope

Introducing Mocha, a very sweet pitbull owned by a fellow named Bryan. We were hanging out at John and Cody’s house this evening, having a BBQ and some drinks. Mocha went to town and chewed up his handmade hemp leash. It was a really pretty leash, I’m sure it took quite some time to make. Playing with some high ISO film, I was attracted to the pattern on the floor.

July 29th, 2010 Cody’s Birthday Party BBQ

Cody, Johnny, Justin, Terah Beth, Katie and myself all got together this evening over at the Vargas’ house to have a birthday celebration for Cody. Justin and Terah Beth cooked up some amazing vegan dishes, (especially the barbequed tofu). We all got engaged in some poker, where Cody totally cleaned up and left us all for poor. Perfect summer night.

July 6th, 2010 Tax Protest, Followup #1

The IRS was quick to dispatch letters for lack of non-payment for my taxes. I received a letter sent May 31st notifying me of the new penalty fees that I have acquired as a lack of my non-payment and further penalties and interest that will be applied on my unpaid amount. For the curious, you can click the cover letter below to see a PDF of the letter that they sent me. An important part of the process for me is to document and make public any interaction that I have with the IRS.

Two things coming up on the horizon :

  • Editing my W-4 at my current job such that no amount is automatically paid to the IRS. It makes no sense for me to pay for penalties while I’m still contributing to what I’m standing against.
  • Searching for a venue/space for a first/last Thursday event here in PDX in which to host a performance art exhibition. The idea is to make repayment to the IRS by sending a hand-written check for every cent owed with the name of a fallen soldier in the memo. According to Antiwar.com, that would bring us to 5,563 names (hence 5,563 checks). If I’m going to repay it, they’re sure as hell going to have to go to great lengths to get their money.
